Who We Are
From Kabul to Scarborough
Hujra was born from a simple but powerful idea: that the warmth of Afghan hospitality deserves a home in Toronto. Our founders brought with them the recipes, the aromas, and the spirit of the hujra — the traditional Afghan guest room where family and friends gather to share food, stories, and laughter.
Every dish on our menu carries the memory of a grandmother's kitchen, a family celebration, or a quiet evening in Kabul. We cook with the same spices, the same patience, and the same love that has defined Afghan cuisine for centuries.
Today, Hujra is proud to serve the Scarborough community and beyond — welcoming guests of all backgrounds to experience the richness of Afghan culture through food.
A cuisine shaped by the Silk Road
Afghan Culinary Heritage
Afghan cuisine sits at the crossroads of Central Asia, the Middle East, and South Asia. Centuries of trade along the Silk Road brought saffron from Persia, cardamom from India, and techniques from every corner of the ancient world. The result is a cuisine of extraordinary depth — fragrant, hearty, and deeply satisfying.
Slow-Cooked Tradition
Our meats are braised low and slow, drawing out deep flavour the way Afghan cooks have done for generations.
Fresh Spices Daily
We grind and blend our own spice mixes every morning — coriander, cumin, turmeric, and more.
Made with Love
Every dish is prepared by hand, with care and attention that no shortcut can replace.
Meant to Share
Afghan meals are communal by nature. Our portions are generous and our tables are made for gathering.
